Ikea Lack Table DIY Hack

Ikea Lack Table Hack

This was probably one of the most easiest DIYs I have done in a while. Ikea is one of my favorite place to shop for home decor on a budget. They have great pieces and are so much cheaper than most big box stores.

If you are familiar with Ikea then I am sure you are familiar with the Ikea lack tableIt is a small table that comes in many different colors for less than $10! These tables are great for kid tables, side tables and make great DIY projects.

I purchased this black table to hold our giant jenga for my husband’s dirty thirty birthday party. So as you can expect the table got a little beat up. Below are some close ups before the makeover.

Supplies:

Mod Podge
Sponge brush
Magazine of choice
Ikea table or any small table you would like to make over

Step 1

Clean your table surface with a dry rag.

Step 2

Rip pages out of the magazine and place on the table in any style that you would like.

The magazine I used had a poster in it that I was able to use in the middle as the main feature. I cut additional pages and placed them around and underneath this piece for the design.

Step 3

Using the foam brush paint a very thin layer of mod podge on the table. Let dry for a bit (this will avoid the paper from bubbling). Place the bottom layers of the magazine pages you will want on the table and press firmly.

I started on the edges since I was going to be placing the poster on top of everything in the middle.

Step 4

Add an additional layer of mod podge on top of the paper. And that’s it. Wait for it to dry completely before using.

Tip: DO NOT drench your table in mod podge. I made this mistake and my paper bubbled up, I personally did not mind. But if you do, make sure that you put a very thin layer of mod podge first wait for it to dry just a bit and place your paper on top and press firmly. Then add another thin layer of mod podge on top.

Like I mentioned earlier this was one of the easiest DIYs I have done in a while and best of all I did not have to buy any additional supplies! My husband loved how the table came out and goes perfectly in his man cave.

      1. Looks great! And you’ve given me an idea for an end table that I have! So thank you for posting this!

  1. Cool idea, I love decoupage. I did something similar with a thrift store desk for my son a few years back using old comic book pages and then coating with poly for an extra durable finish. :).

  2. I know I commented on your Instagram about doing this, too…and then I saw how cheap the tables actually were. It’s going down now! Stay tuned for pics once I can get out to IKEA. Our closest one is 45 minutes away. I know, I’m sad about it too.

    1. Hi Erin! The closes Ikea I have is around 30 minutes away so I feel your pain! Super excited to see how it turns out!

  3. What a great way to salvage the table…we actually got one of these lack tables out of the trash once LOL….never did anything like this to it, now I wish we had…

    1. Hi Myriah! How awesome! I would totally dumpster dive for these table LOL or any good furniture piece. One mans trash is another mans treasure 😄
