DIY $20 Desk Marble Makeover

Welcome back my crafting beauties!

I am very excited to share this DIY project with you all. With only a few supplies, including the $5 marble contact paper star! I completely changed the look of this desk.

This is the first time that I used contact paper on a round edge so it was little challenging, so having an Xacto knife is essential in this project.

I originally purchased this desk online for my son for $20 during Christmas! Luckily, I was able to find him a much bigger FREE desk which I also repurposed, stay tuned for the finished project! So ,instead I decided to make this desk over for my daughter.

Supplies

White Spray Paint
Smoothing tool or credit card
Contact marble paper (I got mine from Walmart for less than $5)
Scissors
Box Cutter X-acto Knife (worked much better than the box cutter)
Desk to makeover

The dark color of the desk did not go with the color scheme that I was going for so I purchased this bottle of 2-in-1 paint + primer spray paint for less than $5 in white satin. I had a second bottle of spray paint in case the primer was not enough but ended up only needing 1 can.

1. Spray paint everything that will not be covered with the marble contact paper, don’t worry about it being perfect since all your imperfections from the spray paint will be covered with the contact paper.

Tip: You could also spray paint the edges of the desk, however since I was going to be putting the contact paper on the edges as well I left the edges how they were.

Once everything is completely dry it’s time for my favorite part, the beautiful marble contact paper that you can purchase for less than $5 a roll at Walmart! They have many designs and patterns if marble is not the look you are going for.

2. Take off any hardware so that you are able to work with a flat surface.

3. Cut a piece off the contact paper roll large enough to cover the first bottom shelf.

4. Stick the contact paper right along the straight edge and used a smoothing tool (or a credit card)smooth out all the bubbles.

5. Trim the excess using the Xacto knife. Sorry didn’t take a pic of this but here is an after pic of what it looks like trimmed.

6. Measure the height of the edges and using the leftover marble paper, create an edge strip about a quarter of an inch longer and stick on the edge. I did mine in sections just make them as long as you can so it’s not too many sections.

Reminder: You can skip this part and just spray paint the entire desk white but I wanted the edges to be marble as well.

7. Press down FIRMLY to ensure that the contact paper is adhered to the desk.

8. Place the Xacto knife right on the edge of the desk and trim along the edge slowly. Trim any hardware holes as well.

9. Repeat the same steps for the second shelf and the top desk surface. I also added a small shelf from Home Depot for less than $10 (includes the brackets and shelf) and used the left over marble paper to cover it as well.

Here is the finished desk in my daughter’s room. How cute and inspiring is my mini’s desk space!?

I hope you like this DIY and it inspires you to redo a piece of furniture you have lying around.
