DIY Dollar Store Storage Container Makeover

I recently purchased this 8 cube organizer shelf for my craft room and was looking for some cost saving storage options. I found these perfect containers at Dollar Tree! Unfortunately, they only had 1 white and 2 blue in stock. I have been using contact paper on many furniture pieces lately (check out my latest project here) and thought the blue containers would be the perfect opportunity to be creative. Contact paper is so easy to work with and they come in many designs and colors! I hope you enjoy this really easy DIY Dollar Store Storage Container Makeover that you can customize anyway you want!

Supplies

Dollar Tree storage containers
Contact paper
Xacto knife
Scissors
Ruler & pencil
Spray Paint or Paint

This part is optional but since I had blue containers that did not go with my color scheme, I decided to paint them white. I used spray paint because that is what I had on hand however, if you would like to use paint that works as well.

After the containers were completely dry I traced the edges of one of sides of the container using a pencil and cut out. I started with a sharpie but quickly switched to a pencil since a sharpie is less forgiving.

I placed it against the side that I would be adhering to ensure that it was the right fit. Using this cut out as a template I cut out an additional 3 pieces since I had 2 containers. I also traced the longer side and used as a template for the remaining sides of the container.

Once I had all my outer sides cut out I adhered one side at a time and using my Xacto knife trimmed off any excess from the bottom.

Using my Xacto knife I also cut out the handle holes using an X shape and folded in.

Next, I moved on to the inside of the container.

Using my ruler, I measured the length and height of the inside. I then drew it out on the contact paper and cut it out. I placed it on the inside and made sure it was the right fit. Repeating the same steps as we did for the outside sides, I used the first cutout of the short and long side as a template and cut out 3 more of each one.

I adhered all 4 of the inside contact paper cutouts and used left over contact paper for the bottom of the container.

It was hard to get the contact paper to align perfectly so there was still some blue showing in some areas. To fix this issue I used the leftover contact paper and just adhered right on top.

TIP: Use a print contact paper instead of a solid color so that you can cover up the missed areas with leftover contact paper. As long as the contact paper is completely adhered to the item you should not be able to see the edges.

Using my Xacto knife I cut out the handle hole from the inside completely out.

And that’s it! I loved how these containers looked in my craft room after I gave them a makeover in the same  color palette.
