As a DIY enthusiast and craft lover I know the importance of having the right tools for each DIY or craft project. Crafting is something that I love to do to step back from my busy life as a mom and de-stress. I have always loved to do crafts ever since the 8th grade when I created my first ever craft project in sewing class. And over my many years of crafting I have learned how important it is to have certain tools to make the experience enjoyable. In this article I will list 5 must have essentials to make your crafting/ DIY projects go much more smoother.
5 Essentials Every Crafter Needs
1. Craft Room/ Work space
I can not stress the importance of a work space enough. I have been crafting for over a decade and have always had my craft supplies in boxes and totes stored in closets. When I would feel the urge to craft I would take all my things out and look through them and work on the floor. It was tough on my back but I didn’t care I just enjoyed crafting so much that I would sit in the same positions for hours without a care in the world.
However this year I am finally creating a craft room/ work space, which I am very excited to share (make sure you follow me on Instagram to get the latest updates). I still have quite a bit to go but the most important thing is that I have all my craft supplies in one room (and not a closet 😕) and I have a table that I can use for my projects rather than the floor.
I know sometimes you may not have a room that you can dedicate to your crafts, but if you are anything like me and love crafts and DIY projects then I highly recommend finding at the very least a corner in your home where you can have a small desk and a few organizing shelves to help you get inspired.
2. Craft Adhesive
Craft adhesive the literal glue that holds your projects together. The three adhesives that I have used for the majority of my projects is Mod Podge, my hot glue gun and my Advance Tape Glider (ATG) gun.
I love Mod Podge because this adhesive is versatile you can make small projects or even use on furniture pieces to give them a completely new look. Check out my easy DIY Ikea Lack Table Hack using just Mod Podge and magazines for inspiration!
A hot glue gun has to be every crafters favorite you can literally do anything with a hot glue gun, I have used it for many projects like party decor, DIY diaper cakes and even home decor for my house. My hot glue gun is nothing fancy , it is a staple and OG in my collection as you can tell. The best thing about the hot glue gun is that it is cost efficient , you can buy the gun and the glue stick at the dollar store!
Another one of my favorite craft adhesives is the ATG gun, I only use this for paper crafts like scrapbooking or making tags and embellishments. The ATG gun is very easy to use but a little tougher to refill, but that’s why they have YouTube right? So if you do a lot of scrapbooking or paper crafts I highly recommend you invest in one of these.
3. Scissors
A good pair of sharp scissors is a #1 essential for a crafter whether you are cutting fabric or paper, or in my case a lot of contact paper, nothing can ruin a good project more than dull unsharp scissors. The hubs bought me these really cool multipurpose scissors on Amazon and they are amazing! I use them for everything and love the gold look it has. So make sure you invest in some good scissors that will last a while if you are going to be cutting a lot.
4. Card Stock
The ever-growing collection of Card Stock, if you are a crafter then you know what I am referring to. I can walk into any craft store and spend hours just looking at all the different colors and designs that they offer in 12 x 12 sized paper. The options are endless and beautiful! I personally love to make scrapbook pages/ books with family photos. However there are so many crafts you can do with paper like gift tags, paper flowers which are becoming more and more popular, kids school projects and even cool wall art like this Paper Heart Waterfall Art I made for my daughter’s room.
None the less paper is a must have for any crafter of any age!
5. Acrylic Paint and Paint Brushes
If you are a mom and have little ones, acrylic paint is a great way to help inspire your kids and allow them to let their creativity side out. I always have some paint brushes and acrylic paint on hand in case we want to create some family crafts, especially during the holidays which has become part of our tradition.
I like to get my brushes and paint from Wal-Mart, the pack of brushes is less than $5 and comes with 25 pieces and the acrylic paint can be as low as .50 per bottle and they have a large selection of paint.
So there you have it, these are the 5 essentials that I think every crafter/ DIY enthusiast should have to make their crafting life easier and more fun!
